SpagoWorld is a Free (Libre) Open Source Initiative supported by Engineering Ingegneria Informatica. Four are the main projects of the Initiative; each of them adds value to the other ones.
SpagoBI: the unified Free Platform for the development of Business Intelligence solutions at enterprise level
it brings the Business Activity Monitoring module to the Spagic project.
Spagic: the Free SOA/BPM Enterprise Integration Platform
it creates an integrated SOA/BPM solution, thanks to the other projects contributions also.
Spago4Q: SpagoBI vertical solution for software processes and products measurement and analysis
it's a SpagoBI specialization contributing to the development of the SpagoBI platform itself.
Four projects with similar features:
Free (libre) software:
released under the GNU LGPL licence, no "professional" or "enterprise" version against payment of a fee.
Hosted by the OW2 Consortium (www.www.ow2.org), SpagoWorld projects are FOSS at enterprise level.
Flexible solutions:
integrate already existing components and develop new modules upon an integration platform approach, in order to realize solutions easily suitable to the users' needs. They are not products to which the users have to adapt!
Enterprise level:
solutions resulting from the experience of enterprise level projects where the applications are mission-critical and have to guarantee functionality and high performances.
Focus on projects development:
the ability of understanding users' real needs as well as the particularity of different projects make the SpagoWorld solutions the best ones in order to face the development of a new software project.
Commercial use:
the open source business model permits to use the SpagoWorld solutions with different categories of products and services.
Support services:
each project can be delivered, on request, with a complete set of support services.
Focus on community and research:
all the projects have a high commitment on following the community necessities and on integrating academy and research innovations.
Creation of an ecosystem of value:
the SpagoWorld Initiative takes part in the creation of an ecosystem that produces value for all its participants, starting from its first community: the OW2 Consortium.
The SpagoWorld projects follow a course that finds in Spago a common origin.
Why Spago? First of all, this is not an acronym, but an Italian name (given by the company promoting the Initiative). It's easy to pronounce, it can generate new names (SpagoBI, Spago4Q, Spagic) within a common ecosystem, it is suited for an integration approach (ties-up but doesn't bind). To someone may bring in mind the very fine Italian cuisine: well, if you like the spaghetti, the Spago software alsp may be an excellent choice for you!
The history begins in 2001 along with the necessity of the Architectures and Consulting Unit of Engineering Ingegneria Informatica (at that time called Engiweb.com) to realize a Java framework in order to develop some internal projects. At the end of 2004 that framework is re-engineered and released in open source, at first on SourceForge. In 2005 the SpagoBI project is released and the solutions are transferred on the forge of ObjectWeb Consortium. In 2006 the SpagoWorld Initiative is launched, starting from the new website, and the transformation of the ObjectWeb Consortium into OW2 begins. In 2007 two more projects, Spagic and Spago4Q, are released. Detailed information on the latest evolutions is available on this site.
